julia weaver, pastor & project artist

i began my arts ministry call and chaplaincy in 1996. fifteen of those years serving in the dane county jail with women in worship and spiritual care brought me into contact with women who needed support and a safe space as they returned to their families and communities from incarceration. backyard mosaic women's project was the response, beginning at st. mark's lutheran church in 2004.

i served the congregation and south madison neighborhood for ten years as coordinator of the promisekids, a unique after-school program that creatively combined spirituality and the arts with a family style meal. the backyard mosaic women's project was then invited to st. john's lutheran church in 2010. in 2014 we received a floor loom that has been dedicated to the spiritual care of those affected by issues of human trafficking. i am currently serving st. john's lutheran church as the pastor of arts and community.

i am an artist with a special love for fiber work, primarily weaving. my doctor of ministry thesis at united theological seminary included a body of woven garments reflecting spiritual themes of beauty and redemption. i offer wisdom weaving; a spiritual care practice, commissioned works and installations. i bring all my gifts and the people and experiences of this project feed me artistically and spiritually.
